Xspress 3

The Next Generation Of Solid State Detector Readout. Capable of data collection at count rates 4Mcps

Many solid state detectors are not limited by their intrinsic rate capability, but by the readout system connected to them.

The Quantum Detectors Xspress 3 was developed to maximise the throughput and resolution of such detectors and remove the bottleneck at the readout stage.

The Quantum Detectors Xspress 3 was developed to maximise the throughput and resolution of such detectors and remove the bottleneck at the readout stage. With count rates measured at 3.9 Mcps, this detector is easily 10X faster than the systems many users have on their beamlines. Xspress 3 can open up the beamline to much faster data collection, its dynamic range can reduce the number of scans required and save large amounts of time with attenuation selection.

Xspress 3 Application Notes

The adaptive filter in Xspress 3 offers the best use of the data available from solid state detectors. Instead of picking a shaping time and working with the results, the system effectively takes data at all shaping times from 12.5ns to 12.8µs and yields every bit of resolution in time and energy out of it. So at the same time as capturing the highest resolution data, with 1024 points above and below the edge, the system is also capturing data at a rate of 80MHz with as little as one point above and below each edge. All of this, without the need to repeat the experiment even once to try a different shaping time or attenuator. The outcome is a much greater understanding of the experiment in less experimental time. Having invested significantly on a cutting edge beamline, end station and Vortex detector, you now have the opportunity to offer your users significantly faster, higher resolution results by upgrading to an Xspress 3 from Quantum Detectors for your Vortex.

Software

The following video is an introduction to the basic features of Xspress 3 operated using the EDM interface for EPICS. MEDM screens are also available, but they are so similar that the following video also applies to them. The primary EPICS components were developed by Diamond Light Source with help from the APS, thanks to those involved, see details here.

Open source software for mapping is available from contributing scientists, please get in touch for details.

The TANGO implementation of the drivers is based on the same C API as the EPICS interface. It has been built to specifications designed collaboratively with the ESRF and Daresbury Lab, see details here.
