Medipix3 hybrid pixel detector technology

Medipix is a family of read-out chips for particle imaging and detection developed by the Medipix Collaborations to address the needs of particle tracking at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The Medipix1 chip, which uses identical front-end circuitry to the Omega3 particle tracking chip, demonstrated the great potential for the technology outside of high-energy physics. To further develop this novel technology and take it into new scientific fields the Medipix2 Collaboration was started in 1999, with many institutes from throughout Europe – including the University of Glasgow, and a group in the USA giving input.

 

The Merlin detector series utilises technology developed by the Medipix3 collaboration headed by the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Medipix3 is a CMOS pixel detector readout chip designed to be connected to a segmented semiconductor sensor. Like its predecessor, it acts as a camera taking images based on the number of particles which hit the pixels when the electronic shutter is open. However, Medipix3 goes much further than Medipix2 permitting colour imaging and dead time free operation. A novel charge summing and allocation scheme is implemented at the pixel level permitting proper binning of the energy of incoming photons overcoming the effects of fluorescence and charge diffusion. As there are 2 counters in each 55μm pixel the chip can be programmed such that one counter is being read out while the other is counting.

The Merlin direct detector system is our interpretation of the Medipix3 chip with a highly evolved readout system developed by the detector group at Diamond Light Source and commercialised by Quantum Detectors. Merlin makes full use of the Medipix3 features and has a powerful computing system to handle to large amounts of data generated. Combined with a user friendly GUI and the flexibility of command line control and plugins for various other software packages, it’s a versatile and powerful detector.

The MerlinEM Hybrid Pixel Detector (HPD) is an advanced detector development in the field of Electron Microscopy, combining direct detection of electrons and rapid readout in a pixelated format ideal for applications such as 4D STEM and TEM dynamic imaging.

Each sensor pixel is individually bump-bonded to an intelligent chip which uses threshold discriminators to distinguish electrons from the background, effectively eliminating all readout noise. This allows for integral mode imaging where multiple short exposure images are acquired and summed together. Uniquely, neighbouring pixels can communicate to mitigate charge-sharing effects, and this, combined with the direct detection of electrons, yields enhanced performance. As beam energies decrease toward 60 keV, the Merlin for EM has been shown to provide near-ideal DQE and MTF detector response.

A Fully Spectroscopic Hard X-Ray Imaging Detector.
The HEXITEC detector measures the energy and position of every incident photon in the 4-200keV range. Each one of the 80 x 80 pixels provides a full energy spectrum with an average energy resolution of 800eV FWHM at 60keV. It is a self-contained module that only requires a mains power supply and connection to a PC or Laptop. It can be supplied with a user friendly GUI to operate the detector and provide calibrated spectra per pixel or industry standard Gig-E- Vision APIs for users to integrate into their own systems.

ISIS Neutron Beam Monitor

Highly Efficient Reliable Neutron Beam Monitor.
The ISIS pulsed neutron source operates 25 instruments for neutron scattering applications. Many of these instruments use one or more neutron beam monitors to measure neutron beam flux. These monitors are used for data normalisation and in a diagnostic role to determine correct settings of beam line equipment including choppers, jaw settings and beam line scrappers. To date more than eighty ISIS Neutron Beam Monitors of this type are in use on ISIS.

With count rates measured at 3.9 Mcps, this detector is easily 10X faster than the systems many users have on their beamlines. Xspress 3 can open up the beamline to much faster data collection, its dynamic range can reduce the number of scans required and save large amounts of time with attenuation selection.

Xspress 3 mini is the new compact version of the popular high-speed fluorescence detector readout Xspress 3. It provides the same performance as a full sized Xspress 3 in a more compact enclosure. This means that Xspress 3 Mini is capable of readout at > 4Mcps count rates, allowing for more efficient use of available photons. Xspress 3 Mini also features a unique variable front end. This means the readout can be matched to the detector without the need for hardware intervention and in an automated fashion. This allows Xspress 3 Mini to be plug and play with multiple detectors. Xspress 3 Mini is also provided with an extensive software suite that allows the readout system to be commissioned and calibrated via a user friendly web based UI. It is also supported by drivers for the synchrotron industry standard control systems TANGO and EPICS. Xspress 3 Mini is targeted at customers with low channel count detectors where Xspress 3 was historically outside of their price range. Xspress 3 Mini provides an opportunity for these customers to significantly improve throughput of their SDD or HPGe detectors at a reasonable cost. Zebra Timing Control System

All-In-One Box Allowing Signal Conversion, Logic Gating, Position Capture, And Triggering. Zebra is a digital signal level converter and position capture unit. The front panel takes signals from multiple single channel inputs in TTL, LVDS, PECL, NIM or Open Collector format, converts the levels to LVTTL and passes the signals to an FPGA. The rear panel passes encoder signals to the FPGA input via Sub-D connectors. The FPGA implements logic gates and position capture circuitry, then signals are translated to be output in the same format as their respective input. The system was designed by the Diamond Controls Group and the unit has seen great success at Diamond across many beamlines from tomography to MX and EXAFS, the unit simplifies and enables more flexibility at once
