3D electron diffraction allows atomic structure determination of nano sized crystals that are too small for conventional X-ray techniques. This unlocks hitherto unknown information to better understand the properties of materials ranging from inorganic, organic, and macromolecular materials.
We are optimising our experimental setup for electron crystallography at HeXI, a unique project which aims to build an electron diffraction optimised instrument to investigate the use of mega electron volt (MeV) electrons in MX structure determination. The Merlin detector offers an outstanding dynamic range for our 3DED experiments. The way Merlin 4S is embedded in the SerialEM platform enables us to fully customise the setup with tailored python commands and save data without any hardware and software delays. We can collect continuous diffraction tilt series taking advantage of the functionalities of the SerialEM suite. The Merlin’s colour display options are particularly useful. It is much better for the human eye and speeds up the process of beam alignment.
